[1 Year Update]: Fixing Spongy Brakes.

If you’ve got spongy/leaky brakes, here is a last resort option you can use to seal your brakes for good!

That is, to use gasket sealer to pinch off any leaky gaps causing your braking power to suffer.

How well has it worked for me?

One day I went to bleed my brakes because I had bought a brand new brake caliper. It was much needed.

However, after installing the new brake caliper and bleeding the brakes, I noticed that my brake line kept leaking air bubbles.

Funny. Even after I closed the bleeder screw tight, there should have been no air bubbles passing through the bleed line.

Unfortunately, that was the case for me. So after 2 bottles of brake fluid wasted by repeating the bleed, I decided to use gasket sealer instead.
I was able to pinch off any gaps or openings from the bleeder screw nut clamping onto the caliper.

And it’s been a year now. So here are the results!

Will Gasket Sealer Fix Spongy Brake Pedals?

This method is useful for when you notice soft brake pedals, but no leaks within your brake system.

Or you may have just bled your brakes recently / installed a new brake caliper, but still notice spongy brake pedals.

If this is the case for you, there is a solution which may work as a complete repair.

A Quick Story

5 months ago I used gasket sealer to fix a leaky brake caliper issue. As the brand new refurbished caliper would constantly leak air bubbles as I bled the brakes; even with the bleeder screw closed!

Now I’m testing how well things have turned out since I’ve used gasket sealer to pinch off the leaky bleeder screw.

The Results

Since then, the brake caliper has done a good job of braking. After 5 months there has been no signs of spongy brake pedal, and the stopping power of the brakes are still firm and solid.

However, I ran into the same problem again when I changed out another caliper on the other side today.

The 2nd newly refurbished brake caliper started to leak air bubbles again.

So I used the same method as before 5 months ago and pinched off the bleeder screw once again.

*Caution – This is a Last Resort method. If you’ve already tried to repair your leaky brake issue and nothing else has worked, then this option may work for you.
