Basic Tools For Replacing Brake Pads & Rotors On a Budget.

The only tools you’ll need to do this repair.

Replacing brake pads and rotors can be done by any beginner. It will take around 2-3 hours to complete the job.

Assuming you’ve already got the starter tool set to start fixing vehicles, this post will only list additional items needed to complete the brake repair.

Giant Plier

You’ll need this tool to reset the brake caliper piston. This is the cheaper option than going with the brake caliper tool kit below.

Brake Caliper Tool Kit

You’ll need this tool to reset the brake caliper piston. This is the cheaper option than going with the brake caliper tool kit.

Getting down to budget.

Let’s recap on the basic tool list you’ll need to get started:

  • Giant Plier CAD $25.32 (US $18.86)

  • Brake Caliper Tool Kit CAD $28.99 (US $21.52)

The total will come out to about CAD $54.31 (US $40.38 as of March 08, 2020). Prices may change over time.

You don’t need to buy both tools here, but if you come across certain brake systems that require the brake caliper tool kit, you’ll need to use the kit.

I’ll upload a picture (or video) soon showing you which kind of caliper needs the kit.
